Cruel names like “Pizza Face” or “Crater Face” have left
their emotional scars on countless teenagers and adults
alike because of the most common skin ailment today: acne.

Eight out of ten people will suffer from acne, most
frequently during their teen years. But acne can strike at
any age, and many adults struggle with it as well. Most
often appearing on the face, acne can erupt anywhere you
have skin, frequently affecting the shoulders, back, and
chest.

In addition to causing embarrassment, acne can also be quite
painful and leave disfiguring scars. For many, once the
breakouts have finally ended, the scarring can be just as
traumatic and even more difficult to overcome.

What Causes acne?

What causes skin breakouts? Over the years many mistaken
ideas have caused a lot of misunderstanding. For example,
for years chocolate was thought to be a culprit. The truth
is that acne is more often caused by hormonal changes and
excess oil in the skin.

Certain hormones called androgens help aid in the production
of oil. Oil that blocks the pores gets dirt trapped in it
and leads to pimples or blackheads. If you have greasy hair
that touches your face, that can contribute to acne.

Your heredity plays a part, too, as does your personal
hygiene. While you can’t do anything about your genes,
simply washing your face regularly can be a big help. Pay
special attention to removing makeup and to washing after
activities that cause a lot of sweating.

acne Treatments and Prevention

There are many different treatments for acne. You probably
already know that you can purchase many treatments from over
the counter. If you have serious acne and these treatments
are not working for you then you might want to talk to your
doctor about a prescription.

There are also many natural remedies, some of which you can
create at home. Still, prevention is better than any
treatment, and while most people won’t be able to avoid
breakouts 100% of the time, you can dramatically decrease
the occurrence.

If you have experienced severe acne outbreaks you are at
risk for permanent scarring. Even if you are unable to
prevent breakouts completely, reducing the number and
frequency of eruptions can significantly reduce your risk of
scarring.
